| A group of volunteers and representatives from the Delaware Water
Gap Recreation Area NPS met in the village on October 14 to review the
extent of the damage to our beloved village and what will be done in
remediating the damages from the August and September storms. While
damages to the historical buildings were not major except for the Garris
Barn, the roadways in the village suffered extensive erosion damage from
the flood waters. The footbridge to the mill as shown in the pictures is
a wreck and needs evaluation if it can be re-used. The main parking lot
is filled with gouges and needs to be re-done before any events can be
scheduled in the village. Walking in the parking lot looks like an
adventure. The major road damage occurred below the Garris House and
past the Garris Barn. At this spot the riverbed took over the road and
pretty much scoured the area. Remediation in this area is a long term
project as various regulatory agencies will have their say so in any
repairs or changes. As we all know the wheels of regulation turn very
slowly. The village remains closed as a public use area until at minimum
the main roadways in the village are made safe for foot traffic and the
parking lot has been declared safe for public use. So even Victorian
Christmas in December will fall victim the the Hurricane that was named
Irene. Something about those "I" storms. Ivan in 2004, Irene in 2011. |
