Moving the Corncrib 2005

The Corncrib below the Garris Barn was situated in a very low marshy area where it was subject to the ravages of the moisture. The sill as well as portion of the side slats in contact with the sill were rotted out. The Friday work crew tackled the project starting on August 12 by jacking the structure up on blocks to evaluate the amount of damage. On August 19, the crew cut off about 6 inches of the side slats - the floor and sill did not have to be removed as it was no longer there. The crew also formed a new stone foundation on the other side of the road from the Garris barn and fabricated a new frame which would fit into the space vacated by the old sill and floor. On August 26, the new frame was installed with the side slats nailed in place and the whole unit was moved approximately 100 feet east to its new location. The move was accomplished using a capstan, rollers and rope. It was a fun project for all involved.
