Cancellation Notice - Millbrook Days

Text of Letter from Wilson Bullivant announcing demise of Millbrook Days 2011.

Dear Friends,
I had a conference call with John Donahue, Bob Karatko, Johnny Carawan, Carla Beasley and Deb Nordeen regarding the 2011 Millbrook Days Event. Considering numerous factors, it was decided to cancel the event for this year.

Millbrook Village sustained an appreciable amount of damage from Hurricane Irene, similar to the damage sustained from Hurricane Ivan several years ago. Numerous washouts in the main parking lot and village roads occurred, a major washout near the Garis Barn and considerable damage to the walking path from the Watergate Area to the lower village occurred. Heavy rain since Irene has saturated the ground and re-flooded several basements. The public rest room was flooded as well as the septic field and the foot bridge from the upper village to the grist mill was damaged and is not useable. Additionally, the Watergate parking area was damaged as well as numerous park roads accessing Millbrook Village. Fortunately, Millbrook's buildings faired pretty well with minimal damage other than basement flooding. Tree loss was minimal and water borne debris from VanCampen Brook and the "Little Delaware" was not significant. The garden survived the storm, and the covered bridge was christened with a good flow of water passing under it, but the structure and the piers were unscathed by brook's waters.

We are disappointed that Millbrook Days had to be cancelled this year, but considering the extent of the problems that exist, it was the proper decision to make. The NPS and Millbrook Village Society are responsible for making our events enjoyable and safe for  our visitors, volunteers and staff.
Our next Millbrook Village event will be Octivities on
October 22, 2011. Maybe we can put some extra effort into Octivities to take some of the bite out of not having MBD this year. Hurricane season should be over and maybe it will stop raining by then!

Please pass this information along as appropriate. Volunteers will be notified and announcements will be made to the media as well as messages in the MVS and NPS websites.
Thank you all for your continued support and your contributions to the Society and Millbrook Village.
Regards, Wil...  (Wil Bullivant, Pres. Millbrook Village Society
